why: Personal vacay time.
when did you book this trip? February 2013
did you take advantage of any special deals or offers when booking this trip? I got a great deal on the flight, however I do find that flights to Nassau are fairly reasonable in general.
which airline did you use? WestJet
where did you stay? With close friends who have a home in Lyford Cay (western tip of New Providence Island, Bahamas).
what did you love about your accommodations? My dear friends who graciously hosted us, of course! I absolutely loved their home and the community they live in… it was divine.
what is the one experience that stands out from your trip? There were so many wonderful moments, but I especially loved biking around Lyford Cay and exploring.
any places of interest? One place I really love is called La Hipica. It’s a Spanish ‘tapas and grill’ off the beaten path, on the western end of the island, and it is so much fun! It’s definitely the place to go for cocktails with friends, and the outdoor live music makes it even more special. Atlantis is a must and it’s a fun day out as there is so much to do there. The aquarium is really something to see – I definitely recommend checking it out!
any hidden gems? One day a whole group of us went on a little adventure to Rose Island. We ended up discovering another tiny private island nearby, where we had the entire island to ourselves for the day. So much fun. I gathered so many beautiful shells for my collection! If you have the opportunity to visit neighbouring islands, do it. You never know what you might discover.
favourite restaurants? My absolute favourite was Mahogany House in Nassau. It is such a fantastic restaurant… loved the ambiance, the décor, and especially the food. One of my favourite dishes was pappardelle with crimini mushrooms and truffle oil. Mouthwatering deliciousness and amazing wine selection. Another fun place we went to for cocktails and nibbles was Sea Glass at The Cove Atlantis. The menu was great for mid-afternoon with tasty salads and wraps. On the way back from Rose Island, was The Green Parrot in Nassau (at the Paradise Island Marina location). They have a really great patio overlooking the harbour. I tried a conch fritter for the first time, and apparently you can’t go there without having a Mudslide cocktail! This place is fun, casual and reasonably priced.
shops? Cole’s of Nassau is such great womenswear store, just outside of Lyford Cay. They carry lines such as Pucci, Missoni, Camilla and Mara Hoffman while stocking the most gorgeous bejewelled sandals and glamourous cover ups. Another favourite was a store called Escape at Atlantis. They cater to men and women and, in addition to clothing, they carry beautiful accessories and shoes. Great household décor items as well…I picked up a unique hourglass as a gift.
who would you recommend go to Bahamas? A fantastic place for couples, friends, and families. There is something for everyone! I have been there several times and never get tired of it. So excited about the new riviera that is under development and opening next year – Baha Mar. I got a glimpse of what’s to come!
any last words? Didn’t have time to check out everything I wanted to, so these are on the list for next year’s trip:
Traveler’s Rest – a new restaurant.
Compass Point – amazing place for a cocktail on the ocean. This was formerly Compass Point Studios (Island Records) and famous musicians recorded there including Bob Marley, Rolling Stones, AC/DC, U2 and more.
Graycliff – a favourite place for fine dining in Nassau. Located downtown in an original mansion from the late 1700’s. Eating there (I’m told) is like stepping back in time. Very formal and also has a real cigar factory.
